This painting is called ”Where The Mountain Stands Away”, a line from The Quiet Lands of Erin, a beautiful song first recorded by Mary o’Hara, whose sister Joan translated this old Gaelic exile song, which we have posted below to evoke even more the nostalgia of words, painting and music…
The lyrics are from a poem Árdaí Chuain (”Árd Tí Cuain”) by Antrim poet, Mac Ambróis, sung in forced exile in Scotland, where the word Erin came to be used by early Scots as both ”Ireland” and ”West” (Éirinn is the dative of Éire, the Irish word for Ireland, which is to the west of Scotland).
