Toehead is a small outcrop of rock on the Isle of Harris (Outer Hebrides) that extends into the sea like, you’ve guessed it, a toe, from the end of the mountain in the painting. The family has always referred to the mountain as “the monnie” for its resemblance to a Loch Ness monster type of creature, with its head (the “toe”) in the water!
